Urban Nest

The property is located in the north of Berlin in the Pankow district. The community has designated an old sports field as building land; 13 new single-family homes are being built here. Berlin's current building regulations only require a distance of 3m from the property line. Garages and carports can even be built on the property line. This is how the idea came about to cut a terrace into the building on the upper floor that forms the center of the house. Through this three-sided “atrium”, the house concentrates entirely on itself. The adjacent rooms have a view onto this center. As a consequence there is no need to compromise the privacy of the house by placing window openings on the outer facades facing the neighbors. At the same time, this incision allows the southern sun to penetrate deeply into the building. The stairwell is illuminated by a vertical window facing the “atrium”, the living room on the ground floor is lit by a horizontal skylight. The three children's rooms face the street side. The parents have their own area, which is separated from the hallway by a slight difference in level. It is directly connected to the „atrium“ through a door. The home office on the upper floor can be connected to the outside space through a spacious sliding door. The atrium is clearly defined as the parents' private outdoor space, while the children find plenty of space to play in the garden. The individual design of the house was planned down to the last detail. The patio railing, designed specifically for this home, was developed from the Morse code for the word „ZUHAUS".
